Over the centuries, many uses and beneficial properties of cilantro have been recorded. Its culinary applications are incredibly versatile. In moments, it can add a fresh, flavourful twist to meat dishes, salads, dips or stir-fries. This distinctive, spicy flavour can brighten almost any meal.

Primary Benefits

  • Cilantro essential oil is obtained from the culinary herb coriander, a kitchen staple whose many uses and benefits are widely recognised in gastronomy.
  • Distilled from coriander leaves, Cilantro essential oil has a distinctive, clean aroma that adds a delicate, fresh flavour to foods.
  • It has a light, spicy aroma.
  • Its spicy character makes it ideal for enriching homemade dips, dressings, salads and a variety of savoury dishes.

Cooking with Cilantro Essential Oil

Essential oils are far more concentrated than dried herbs, spices or other flavourings, so even the smallest amount can give food remarkable flavour. When cooking with Cilantro essential oil, use the toothpick method: dip the end of a clean toothpick into the oil bottle, then stir it through the other ingredients. Mix thoroughly, taste, and repeat only if more flavour is needed.

Uses

  • Use it to flavour stir-fries, salads and dips and enjoy Cilantro’s distinctive aroma.
  • No more chopping cilantro: simplify cooking by using the essential oil distilled from the plant instead.

Cautions

Sourcing

Growing cilantro requires careful attention. The plant needs plenty of sunlight, but excessive heat can cause it to bolt. Bolting occurs when the soil becomes too warm and the plant grows so quickly that it can no longer be harvested properly or produce oil of suitable quality. Parts of Asia provide an ideal climate for reducing this risk.

Coriander is an annual culinary and medicinal herb with small, feathery green leaves. Its pale pink or white flowers grow in umbrella-like clusters. The plant can reach about 50 cm in height. Coriander is planted every two to three weeks from late spring and is usually harvested about one month after planting. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves.
