Sourcing
doTERRA's Ginger essential oil is produced using the Co-Impact Sourcing model in Madagascar and Kenya, where we collaborate with hundreds of local small farmers, also known as "outgrowers."
Ginger is planted in spring and harvested in autumn or winter, depending on when it ripens sufficiently. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the rhizome, which is the rootstock. On average, between half and one kilogram of ginger rhizome is needed to fill a 15 ml oil bottle. The rhizome is not identical to the root; it is the underground, modified stem of the plant that continues into its root system. doTERRA's Ginger essential oil is unique. While most oil manufacturers distill already dried rhizomes, our oil is always made from fresh rhizomes, shortly after harvest. This guarantees a better chemical composition and aroma.
